5 Great Early-Semester Activities

Start Strong with These Early-Semester Activities

As educators, we know the first couple of weeks of school are a golden opportunity to build strong classroom culture. Trust is built, relationships are formed, and the tone for the year is set. In an Empowered Classroom, this time isn’t just about reviewing rules or jumping into curriculum—it’s about intentionally creating a community where every student feels safe, seen, and valued.

That said, healthy classroom culture doesn’t run on autopilot. While the early days may see the biggest investment of time, it’s nurtured throughout the year—connecting lessons to real life, personalizing learning, and giving students real input that shapes their experiences. As the back-to-school buzz fades into the steady rhythm of the early semester, it’s worth having strategies to keep community-building front and center well past the first week of school.

Here are five Empowered activities – all available for free with an Empowered Hub account (click here to create one now) – that will do the trick.

MY STORY INTRODUCTIONS

ACTIVITY’S PURPOSE Building Relationships

PRINCIPLES Responsibility, Passion, Opportunity

ABOUT Every student enters your classroom with a story, and this activity creates space for them to share it. Students create a one-slide digital collage (or poster) highlighting their background, interests, and values—sharing as much as they feel comfortable. This is more than an icebreaker; it’s the start of building a classroom where students feel they belong and their voices matter.

SPEED INTERVIEWS

ACTIVITY’S PURPOSE Building Relationships

PRINCIPLES Opportunity, Win-Win Focus

ABOUT Think “speed dating” for finding complementary strengths. Students rotate through quick, structured conversations sharing their skills, challenges, and preferences when working with others. They’ll finish with a deeper connection—understanding of each other’s unique talents and gifts. This activity also helps make more-thoughtful groups (later) for collaborative and project-based learning.

BRIDGE BUILDING FOR TEAM BUILDING

ACTIVITY’S PURPOSE Better Collaboration

PRINCIPLES Integrity, Knowledge, Freedom

ABOUT Equal parts engineering, creativity, and teamwork: groups build a free-standing bridge with limited materials and periods of limited communication. Students must, together, plan, and adapt under unusual constraints—like in the real-world where success requires problem-solving and collaboration. Hands-on and high-energy, it’s a great break from the typical sit-and-get classroom routine.

ONE WORD FOCUS

ACTIVITY’S PURPOSE Personal Goal Setting

PRINCIPLES Responsibility, Knowledge, Passion

ABOUT Students can choose one Principle as their personal focus for the semester. They’ll reflect on why that principle resonates, set related goals, and share (if they choose) with peers. Post these focus words in the classroom or keep them in student journals for mid-year check-ins. It’s simple but powerful—a way to connect personal growth to daily learning and increase student ownership of their educational journey.

MY FAVORITE MISTAKE

ACTIVITY’S PURPOSE Growth Mindset Reflection

PRINCIPLES Responsibility, Integrity, Opportunity, Sound Judgment

ABOUT Celebrating mistakes as a vital part of learning, students can share a “favorite mistake” and what it taught them. Teachers can model (sharing a mistake and their takeaways) and to encourage low-risk “shares” at first. This activity—best in classrooms that feel like safe spaces—helps build resilience, encourages reflection, strengthens empathy, and inspires students to embrace growth opportunities.
